Sony Vegas crasheswhen i try to open or import an H.264 video

This is a known problem with the Aiptek HD camcorders. You need to transcode them to another format before you can use them in Vegas. Just follows Keith Kolbo’s excellent tutorial: Using GO-HD files in Sony Vegas Pro 8. You will need to purchase Quicktime Pro ($29USD) or find some other way to transcode them.

I was wondering if there is a way to use the files directly in Vegas, without having to convert them first.

I just got back from the seaside and there are like 140 vacation videos stored on my SD card.
I would like to edit them and make a documentary but it would be a nightmare to convert the videos one by one, even with the fastest converter.
It looks like QuickTime can’t do lossless batch converting. Or could it?

There is no way to use these directly in Vegas. It looks like Quicktime processing is lossless. It’s just doing a stream copy to rewrite the file in the correct format. Unfortunately there is no batch processing.

Needless to say, anyone who buys a new camera should check that it works with their computer software before buying it. It looks like this camera works fine on a Mac but has problems with a PC.

If you have a later version of Nero, import them into Nero Vision, their rudimentary NLE, via Make Movie. Then you can export them to Cinema AVC which is 1280 x 720, or, either Nero Digital or Nero Digital AVC at 1920 x 1080. They will look and play fine in Vegas 8. The Nero Showtime player does a good job with all of these files.
