I have sony vegas 9, this is the first version of vegas that i have ever used. I primarily have used adobe premiere in the past.

my problem is with the (cti) current time indicator marker, i dont know what its called in vegas but the marker that tells you where you current are in the video.

when i press play the (cti) begins moving but there is another line that stays where i started from, its like a 2nd cti and when i press the (s) key to cut, it cuts from the second stationary (cti) and not from the current playpoint.

I dont understand why its there, or how to get rid of it, and if i can’t disable it how do i make it so the cuts i make as the video is playing (cuts at the specific play point i am currently at NOT at the start point from where i started playback from)

in premiere as you play the video and press cut it cuts exactly where you currently are in the video, in vegas it seems to keep cuting from my start playback point.

I want to cut exactly where i currently am in the video and not have to stop and move the (stationary cti) forward to cut.

What i end up doing is stoping the video, moving the stationary cti to where the current playback point is then pressing cut, which really slows my work down.

    any help would be appreciated.

If you pause rather than stop your time line curser the one that is moving will stop where it is and will become one and the same as your first curser line which is simply an indication of where you started from. If you are playing and you press pause the where you were line will jump forward to the where you are line and will be your new where you were line when you start again. If you are playing and you press stop the where you are line (curser) will jump back to the same spot as the where you were line and you can play the same area over again. Having said that (if anyone could understand it) I find that my “S”plit command will split (cut) where my where you are line is (that is the one that is playing) not where the where I was line – still with me? So something seems to be wrong with your program. You could probably work around this by pausing where you want to split, make your split and continue to play to the next spot rther than splitting on the fly.

Many people use the space bar and the enter key for stopping/pausing. What they do can be changed in preferences.

yes mine is cutting at the “where you were line ” and not at the ” where you currently are line ” when i press the “s” key. Which is making my editing extremely slow. any idea of how to fix this?

vegas SHOULD split the clips exactly the same way you describe it in premiere, and it does on my machines.

I looked in the internal preferences (hold down SHIFT when clicking OPTIONS/PREFERENCES) but couldn’t find a switch that explained your behaviour – hopefully someone will be able to do so, or you’ll need to try reinstalling vegas.

Just to confirm, this is Vegas Pro 9 you’re using and not one of the Movie Studio versions, right?
I’m asking in case this is a difference between the two programs.
I use Pro 9 and, like Terry and Adam, mine splits “where I am”.
Try Adam’s suggestion of re-installing it and see if that helps.

I am using vegas pro 9

when i first start editing it does as it should and cuts where the current playback point is
but if i touch a clip with my mouse to delete it then press play again it will start cutting from the “where you started from point” and not where the current playback point is.

1 so i press play then i press “s” to cut as the video is playing back and ‘THE VERY FIRST TIME’ it works as it should

    2. but then soon as i pause and play again or pause and delete a piece and play again it starts cutting from the ” where you were originally point” not the current playback point. It’s very annoying

I actually have to grab the ” where you started from line” and move it to the current playback line then press cut for it to cut in the correct place for some reason.

you’re probably pressing PLAY by using the SPACEBAR. Stop that, right now, y’hear?!

    use the ENTER key instead

    🙂

“2. but then soon as i pause and play again or pause and delete a piece and play again it starts cutting from the ” where you were originally point” not the current playback point. It’s very annoying”

As has been said already, that’s not normal behaviour so try a re-install.

I will try and reinstall and see if that works.

what is the difference between using the spacebar and using the enter key exactly?

spacebar goes back to first position.

    enter resumes at current position

Space bar is by default a ‘play/stop’ while enter is ‘play/pause’. There is a check box in preferences (about 1/2 way down general tab that can change space bar (and F12) to play/pause.
