sony Vegas 7.0, to RAID or not to RAID…
OK so what kind of performance boost would I be likely to gain by setting up a RAID 0 array vs. 1x 160Gb HDD w/16Mb cache for Windows, Vegas 7.0, and all other programs with 1x 500Gb HDD w/32Mb cache dedicated for all raw and rendered video/audio files. Should I set up a RAID array, and if I did, what kind of performance gain would I get, and should the RAID array be for Windows and all the programs, or dedicated to the video/audio files? Or any thing ells?… I have an Intel Core 2 Duo e6600 @ stock speeds, 2Gb of SUPER*TALENT ddr2 667Mhz RAM, soon to be 4Gb of OCZ ddr2 800Mhz, and an XFX GeForce 9400GT 1Gb, (512Mb on board, and up too 512Mb of system memory), and I’m keeping my eyes open for any LGA775 Core 2 Quads on sale new or used for purty cheap, I know that would be good to.

I would not set up a single RAID 0 array in that configuration for several reasons. (1) the RAID 0 becomes a single point of failure for your whole system. If you loose one disc you loose everything! (2) You want your OS and programs physically separated from your video files. The RAID 0, while faster, will still have the potential for the disc heads for the windows swap file and your video files to be in contention. (3) Having a separate OS disc makes it easier to backup and restore from bare metal if you have a catastrophic failure.
I would use separate drives for OS/Applications and video. Eventually you can set up a RAID 0 just for your video files if you feel that file I/O is a bottleneck to editing. More often than not, you will be CPU bound unless you are working with uncompressed video and a RAID 0 will be unnecessary.

OK well yeah it is currently setup wit Windows and all programs on one 160Gb drive with one 500Gb drive for the video files, which are recorded “raw” straight to that drive, then Vegas renders them and puts the rendered files on that drive as well, I was just curious as to whether or not putting a RAID 0 array in for the dedicated Video drive would get me a noticeable boost to render times or not, the case is an Antec 3U rack-mount, and only has room for 3 HDDs, so if I wouldn’t get much use from a RAID array then I only wanted the 2 HDDs so I could get a little air-flow around them better.
