Hi, first of all this is my first post, but I’ve been
reading members’ threads for the last 18 months and
I’d like to thank those who’ve helped me out in the past.

I recently shot a short film on my Sony HVR-V1P(New Zealand)
camera. NZ is a PAL country so the camera 1080i and has
the ability to shoot in progressive. I recorded to HDV (on tape) and shot it in the 25p mode.

I am editing in Vegas 7.0e and have printed to HDV tape. My
project properties are set for best, video quality is set to
high on the slider(31), The template is set at HDV 1080-50i, progressive,
and the field order is set to progressive. All individual
clips on the timeline are set to progressive in ‘properties’.

I have printed it to HDV tape and run it through a HDTV and
it looked ok, but here is my problem…

I took the HDV tape to Park Road Post, Peter Jackson’s post-production facilities,
to get some advice about colour
correction (they are very supportive of young filmmakers), and
we watched it on a big screen, but there were problems with
field order. It was watchable but at times it looked almost
like two images were overlapping. They thought I might have
not ticked a box somewhere in the rendering process, but
as they work on the full AVID suites and not
Vegas they couldn’t offer any concrete suggestions.

I don’t really know what is going on, but I am starting to suspect
that the issue is that 1080i cameras with progressive scan aren’t
really delivering 1080p and I only have a dv 25p quality project.

Any help would be very appreciated

I don’t own a Sony HVR-V1P but I think your problem is that the Sony HVR-V1P is HDV and HDV only supports 50i (PAL interlaced). So while the camera may have captured 25p from the CMOS sensor, it had to lay it down on a 50i tape. The clips that you captured should have had their properties set to interlaced by default. I have a HVR-Z1U and when I shoot Cineframe24 the video is really 29.976 interlaced. I know the V1 is different but HDV is HDV. Like I said, I don’t have a V1 but in looking at the specs it is definitely recording 50i to tape.

I’m thinking that you should not have changed the project properties to progressive unless you were going to output progressive (which you did not since you printed back to a 50i tape). You should have left the default template for HDV 1080-50i. It probably deinterlaced and then re-interlaced and caused the problem you are seeing. I would go back and change the project to the default 1080-50i template and print to tape again and see if that fixes things. (worth a try since no V1 owners have responded to this post)

Thanks for replying John. I think you’re right I should have just kept it as an Upper field project. It’s all very confusing though… it is progressive, but it’s not… it is interlaced, but it’s not. I’m going to go with: it is interlaced from now on I think.

I will follow your advice and change the properties before I render again. Someone else has advised me to render as a progressive to an avi using the CineForm HD codec V2.5, use this as an intermediary and then open a new 50i upper field project and render out as interlaced. What do you think?

    Cheers, Glen

I think that’s as bad as what you originally did because it is deinterlacing to render progressive and then re-interlacing to go back to a 50i project. You want to avoid all of these conversions. Just use what’s on the tape in the format it exists on the tape.

The video from the camera tape is interlaced. Printing back to tape is interlaced. If you want the fields to be the same, don’t ever convert them to progressive. If in the final render, after you have the color grading complete you want to print the final project as progressive, then and only then I would render to a progressive MPEG2 file to place on DVD or Blu-ray.
