I use the Media Manager and of course most of the files there are offline. Whenever I click a picture to see the properties I get asked where the file is located. And since it is offline I have to live with a red cross on it after checking the properties only – apart from the stupid pop-up asking me where I have to click and click to get back again.

To me this is so annoying that I will stop using the Media Manager and look for a better solution. Is there not a simple setting to get rid of those red crosses and those pop-up windows? Now I use a backup of the medialib file to get rid at least of the red crosses. And if this is really programmed with such a poor design (what I still cannot believe in case of not a freeware) does anybody know a better way to organize the media files?

I’m not a MM user myself, but if files are labelled offline, it generally means they can’t be found at their “last known address”.

Is the drive they are on internal or external – and is it always given the same letter?

I have many, many media files in the Media Manager. I do not have most of the media on my HDs but many on DVDs – would fill up my HDs many times for mostly history. So most of the media ends up with the offline red line – apart from the annoying pop-up asking you where to look for it. Does not look good in an application trying to help you to manage your media.

If you are not a MM user yourself, do you know an application handling this topic in a better way? I am really tired of this offline behavior. Would like to know what the developers at Sony use. Cannot be the MM 😉

I use Explorer myself – I have a folder for each project and within that folder are separate folders for Captured Video, Audio, Stills, Renders etc.

If you use “stock” or library footage a lot, and much of this is stored on DVDs I guess any database would help to index them – I know that Media Manager is just such a data base and the tags allow you to have many different links to the same media, but if it can’t find media because it’s on a shelf on a DVD it has to have some way of telling you this.

The concept of Media Manager is not bad. And you are right that Media Manager should tell me that the file is offline. But this you see in the properties of the media already! No need to bring two annoying popups that it wants to look for the media and for the rest of your life there will be a red line accross the media. I did not want to load the media but simply want to look at the properties – tags and storage location. When you press cancel after the 1st and after the 2nd annoying popup (there are 2) it works. But never mix up the cancel buttons – the red line will be on the media for sure and for ever. No way to get rid of it without reindexing the media or restoring a backup of the medialib file. And the funny part of this concept is that even if all of your media is offline the red line only shows up on media where you ever clicked on it on whatever day before. If you never clicked on it it will be show as online 😉

I will look around for a MM without this “special feature”. If anybody has a good software I would be very greatful for a hint.
