  • Sony Vegas 12 .r3d editing lag – advise needed

    Hello everyone,
I’m currently editing a project on Sony Vegas Pro 12 (trial, for now). I am editing RAW .r3d files from a red epic (a mixture of 5k, 4k, 3k and 2k). The project has about 400GB of data, and the music video is 2:45 minutes long.

My PC computer has an i7 3770K processor with 16GB of 1600 RAM. Win 7 64bit. The graphics card is a GeForce GTX650.

Having edited about 30 seconds of footage, the project is becoming very laggy (sometimes around 3 fps), even when the preview is set to PREVIEW(AUTO), and even DRAFT(AUTO). I believe my graphics card is the weakness here. I also sometimes get the ‘red-screen of death’ whereby my preview window goes totally red.

My ram is by no means maxing out – it uses about 4GB RAM while playing back and editing. My CPU never exceeds 50%/60%. I understand that these RAW files are massive, but nothing on my computer seems to be maxing-out. I think the weakness lies in my graphics card. I have also disabled the effects.

Can anyone give me advise on how I can improve playback; it’s very important for me to get timing right when cutting this video, and I can’t do this with all the lag.

    Thanks in advance,
    Will

Have you tried proxy editing? Open Project Media window, select your media files, right click and choose “Create Proxy”

I haven’t tried this. My workstation is a few miles away at the moment, in London.

Tell me, what does proxy editing entail? Are there any drawbacks or complications from editing proxy files? (nb I’m not very experiencing in editing – I’m still in the learning stages and have never edited highgrade footage before on this scale).

Also, thanks for you swift reply – I will try with these proxy files asap (I wouldn’t have know if you didn’t tell me).

One more question: Because I’m editing RAW, I’m able to access the raw information ie color temperature, exposure, ISO etc. If I create proxy files of these raw r3d files, am I able to continue to access and adjust the information within the RAW r3d files, or will I have to create a new proxy files every time I adjust the raw ISO, for example?
