Sony V1 Capture Nightmare! “Searching for Media”…
Hi all,
Can anyone who has recently purchased a Sony V1 (mine is from the UK) please respond if you have had capturing problems using this camera?
With either capture now or logged clips the capture preview window stops saying capturing to read “searching for media”. Somtimes this results in no capture at all or clips of the exact same duration (most recently all 4sec 24 frames exactly). On top of all that the problem seems to be intermittent, capturing 40 tapes before presenting itself consistently but still sometimes working even now.
I have tried multiple machines with different hard drives, different controller settings and different cables – all to no avail! I have also tried different tapes but results seems to be the same. As I shot on the same camera I dont think it is some disagreement between shot footage and camera playback. I guess the only thig I haven’t done is tried the tapes in a nother deck? Any other suggestions???
As this is a new set up I am rally anxious about this as I was planning to use the cam as a deck half the time, so capturing comprising a major aspect of the investment. With time fast passing towards a major deadline I am desperate for advice.

Did you shoot HDV?
With the Sony HDV Decks, there is a setting in there for iLink. Default is to Down Convert. This must be turned OFF in order to capture HDV correctly.
Check to see if the camera has the same type of setting and if it does, turn OFF the down convert and try again.

Yep thanks for that one. Been onto the downconvert and all cam/system prefs that I can think of… but happy to keep checking them too if you can think of any others.

There r more known probs with the V1 than the Z1 with regards to playing nice w/ FCP…

FCP does not see my V1U but I can still capture using AIC1080i60
no problems other than converting 24p.( have to use cinema tools.) -
Hi all,
I tried a capture using the Apple Intermediate Codec… was a very strange process. A message in the corner of the capture preview pane came up saying the preview was XX% behind the capture, then the tape ran out and the preview pane continued “processing” the media. Then the whole system crashed. Is this normal (not the crash obviously), can someone explain the codec to me?

Hey guys,
Sorry I dropped out a bit, this capturing started to work and my internet stopped working. BOTH seem to be workign now! It seems I had 2 cross over problems effecting my set up.
I went back to try capturing on different machines but had no luck, so then I tried capturing straight to the hard drive of my laptop, with the camera as the only device. At first it didn’t work but then I tried the old “Quickdraw” method, quickly switching the camera from CAM mode to VTR and it worked. So now I am capturing each tape then pulling out the cam and putting in the hard drives, copying media over to media druves, reconnecting media and clearing internal HD. Laborious but at keast I’m up and running.
So it seems that in my case the camera/FCP comes unstuck when there are multiple devices hooked up through the firewire. I was using a firewire bus most of the time, but I had also tried plugging the cam direct into a G5dual 2ghz… maybe I didnt try the fast on/off method as well??? Cannot remember.
Obviously there is a problem there as I still need to regularly hit the on/off technique even now to continue capturing, otherwise the capture will drop out as before. Also, the camera makes some kind of clunk when the mode is switched over? I guess this always happens but am I likely to cause some damage switching back and forth so often? What is this noise? Are you guys thinking this is hardware or software? I have tried all other devices and cables separately and they seem to work fine, even chained up togehter at the same time to run. I am now even running a new 640GB external drive in addition to the my main old drive.
So can I tell Sony there is a problem with the camera if I need to do the on/off thing? Or is it FCP not seeing the cam? Someone mentioned a potential issue with the power coming in (or was it out) of the device to drive the firewire? Is that possible? What can I do to get this situation fixed so I can capture direct to my media drives?
Happy to be capturing now – but not happy it’s a workaround!
