Sony PVM9L3 monitor composite out through HVX or Kona for HD color correction
Shane was mentioning in an earlier post that you can not get accurate HD correction using SD composite out. Shane can you please
explain why? I am planning to use a PVM9L3 for field monitoring using 480i composite out while shooting and then use it in the edit room through the HVX or a Kona card again using 480i rather than getting a separate Sony PVM 14L5 with HDSDI card. The 14L5 would be too big and fragile for field use, plus you would have to get a component to HDSDI convertor to get true CRT HD field monitoring with the 14L5.

Bottom line- you are not seeing every pixel as shot but rather looking through a window if you color correct in SD downcovert. You’re just not seeing what you really shot. I recommend Kona or one of the Decklink cards. If you have a good HD monitor this is the final piece of the puzzle.

Colour correcting HD using an SD feed / monitor is not a good idea, as Noah pints out you have a much lower resolution images, thus may miss critical issue such as missed focus etc. Another important issue is that HD and SD have quite different colour gamuts, HD is usually Rec 709 and SD is usually “601”. Not only will they look different but you may not be able to reproduce certain “HD” colours in SD.

Also, you don’t need the HDSDi converter for the 14L5/1. Hook up the HVX component cables to the onboard component inputs of the 14L5/1 and you are set.
