Sony PMW-EX1 vs Panasonic HVX-200 Shootout footage online
Posted by Matt Devino on January 4, 2008 at 6:15 pmHey Everyone,
Just wanted to give a heads up that we’ve posted a bunch of footage and stills from a shootout we did over the weekend between these two cameras. It’s not all encompassing or completely scientific, we just put both cameras next to each other and pointed them at the same scene, with out of the box presets on both cameras. I think what we got is pretty interesting, so check it out! Here’s the link:

January 4, 2008 at 8:39 pmThanks Matt! I’m very skeptical about long GOP compression, but I didn’t see a single artifact in any of that footage.

January 4, 2008 at 8:51 pmNo problem. I think Sony has done a very good job with their long-GOP compression cameras. I own a V1U and shoot snowboarding with it a lot and very very rarely see any artifacts. It seems the EX1 is just as good if not better at avoiding artifacts, and 35mbit/s is nice too.

January 4, 2008 at 8:54 pmThanks for the link. The footage of the charts is most telling, WOW! 1/2 chips vs 1/3?
I know it’s a different price point and bigger chips but I would like to see how the EX1 holds up with the Pany HPX-500David Hetzer

Nicely done mini shootout. I surely appreciated it. The sharpness, low light capabilities and noise levels show a dramatic story. Panasonic can bob and weave all they like, but anyone who sees this comparison wouldn’t consider the two camcorders in the same breath. When you factor in how far you can push in low light without getting too objectionable noise, there must be 3 or 4 stops difference and the HVX is generally considered to be a little better than any HDV camcorder in lower light. Remarkable!

For a long time I couldn’t believe that a MPG2 Long GOP, 420/35Mbps could beat an Intraframe 422/100Mps format. Only the direct feedback from people on this forum that work
with both formats in a daily base made me think that I could be wrong.
I ordered the EX1 before I could see any picture from it. Now that I sow many images from the EX1 I just can’t wait for my Ex1 to arrive.

January 5, 2008 at 1:58 pmI showed the comparison to my prefered shooter who has used the Panny on a few productions and loved it. His response to the shootout was…”Well the Panny footage doesn’t look baaaaddd”.
