    Hi All,

Trying to capture a timeline form a Sony JH-3 Deck.

    My system:

    Octocore mac 3.0ghz
    16gb ram
    Kona 3 card
MaxxDigital 8TB Esata Raid (Raid 5)

    Client’s Sony JH-3 deck

    Issues:

I can get video when I capture (at Kona 8bit 1080i 29.97), but no audio.

Also, if I try to capture prores HQ or Kona 10 bit uncompressed it drops frames.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Any ideas?

[Matt Gottshalk] “I can get video when I capture (at Kona 8bit 1080i 29.97), but no audio. “

is the Kona control panel set to input embedded audio? AES is the default.

Ok those could be 2 different things-
1080 UC footage dropping frames is usually a storage issue -but that array should be fast enough.

1080 ProRes dropping frames has to do with your configuration. RAM is the #1 culprit- first re-seat all of the chips, making sure that you are only using matched sets. Pull All unmatched chips and all less than 1G and see if you can capture.

    Well,

I opened up the mac, ALL ram was 2gb sticks, all from the same manufacturer. Reseated it anyway. Also reseated the Kona 3 card and Esata card.

No dice on 10 bit, no dice on 8 bit either as FCPro is giving me deck control issues in batch digitizing. I can digitize by capture now.

    I think it is a JH-3 issue.

    Matt –
I don’t know what generation of MAC you have. the Kona 3 and the SAS/SATA host card must be in x4 slots (or higher) – newer MAC Pros have all x16 slots, but if you have any of these cards in a x1 slot, you will be screwed.

Right now, go to your AJA Utilities folder, and run AJA System test on the Maxx EVO drive array. Select a 2 Gig file, and select a test size of at least 1080i or 2K (the last 2 choices in AJA System test). Run this test. Are you getting a MINIMUM of 450mb/sec thruput ?

As for your audio, go to the AJA Control Panel, select the input tab, and select EMBEDDED AUDIO (and not AES/EBU audio).

Let me know what happens. You should NEVER be getting dropped frames with this configuration.

I think Bob is onto it with the card locations. We had the same problem with a blazing system and RAID, SD was capturing but HD was dropping. Turned out the system arrived with the fibre channel card where the AJA card should have been. Swapped them around as per the AJA tech notes and problems solved.

This should show you what you need.

what frame rate was the tape recorded at? we have seen video with no audio if the JH3 is not set correctly to match (or crossconvert) the tapes rate. (ie 23.98 tape and deck set to 24, etc.)

    Deck works now.

Kona input needed to be on EMBEDDED audio vs AES.

AJA tech support emailed me a plugin to keep FCPro from polling the deck every few seconds.

    Everything is working fine.

    Thanks all.
