We are capturing HDCam footage via firewire from a Sony JH-1 deck with the iLink/DV output board, and Final Cut Studio is indicating that there are timecode breaks and either making a bunch of subclips and missing out the footage between the pre- and post-rolls, or escaping out of capture completely with an operator aborted capture error message. The only problem with this is that the tapes are perfect with no tape stops, no breaks and no other nasty suprises. I’ve tried both firewire and firewire basic settings for the deck control, and captured in play now and capture clip with in and out points set, and am getting the same hits each time. I’ve also tried taking the pre- and post-roll settings longer and shorter with no change, and used two different FCP systems. Any ideas, guys, before we get into the messy recapture in HDCam instead of DV?

    Chris,

It’s either A). the firewire cable/connection or B). a setting discrepancy between your capture settings and what the JH3 is sending.

Double check that the “flavor” of TC on the tape is what you’re trying to capture. That would be my first call.

Do you have a different way of digitizing, like an AJA or Blackmagic card? RS-422 deck control is a much more stable/accurate method for digitizing. If that deck and that tape work with this alternate way in, then you know your firewire is the flaw.

I’m putting my money on a wrong setting.

    Good luck.
