Does anyone yet have hands-on experience capturing 1080/24P and 30P footage into FCP5? I’m just wondering what the caveats are at this point as I am about to embark on a new project and would like to use the V1U. In the past, it seems like everytime Sony comes out with a new camera/format that is takes a few months for FCP to catch up with capture presets.

Also.. it’s been asked here before, but does anyone have actual experience with the new Sony HDV hard disk recorder and FCP5? Can you really edit right off the drive? Can the files be directly copied to an hd and imported into FCP for editing? Or.. as I suspect, is the footage non-QuickTime compatible?

Seems like Sony has always been biased toward the Win platform and leaves Mac users to fend for themselves (despite the fact that the CEO of Sony appeared with Steve during the keynote at MacWorld 2006).

I’ve no doubt that the HVR you’re looking at is compatible with FCP 5.1.2 tape/wise. The hard disk unfortunately doesn’t record media that can be used directly in FCP, you’d need to demux the files first, they are m2t files… There’s several free utilities that will do this.

    Sony Makes PC’s… figures, eh?

So.. would it best to get a FireStore unit to record to (ie. a FS-4 Pro) if I decide I really need to record to disk? Or is there something better?

Sony also makes Vegas for WIN XP so don’t blame Apple if they make sure Vegas can handle their camera formats first. I’ll bet however that Vegas is also behind.

I’m well aware of Sony’s vested interest in Vegas and its PC business. I was just pointing out that it appeared in Jan 2006 when the CEO of Sony appeared on-stage with Steve Jobs to announce the ‘Year of HD’ (they showed iMovieHD importing Z1 footage) that perhaps Sony was now going to take a more platform agnostic roll and begin to support the Mac platform (i.e. QuickTime) equally with win formats. While Sony does sell PC gear, they don’t really need to help MS isolate mac users. They could easily support QuickTime in Vegas (that may not make economic sense, but they could do it) and easily support QuickTime on the Mac.

Focus was able to create a hard disk recorder that records to either QuickTime or AVI so it is platform agnostic. Sony could easily do the same. And I don’t see Sony supporting QuickTime as an option on it’s HD recorder as threatening either Vegas or their PC business. But.. it looks like maybe nothing has change; that, unless someone can verify otherwise, the new Sony hd recorder probably doesn’t support QuickTime and probably never will.

This may seem like the pessimistic point of view, but its a realistic one. Sony does have this way of saying that we need to do what they want us to do. This is the reason that Panasonic has taken so much of the market and I have to say that Panasonic was extremely smart in doing this.

We use the XDCAM HD system with FCP. While it does work great, there are some major issues that need addressing such as not being able to work in AfterEffects or other third-party programs with XDCAM HD. As a matter of fact, Compressor has similar issues with XDCAM HD. Because of this type of thinking on Sony’s part, I’ve coined the phrase… “We’ve been Sonyed”.

Please, don’t get me wrong, I think Sony make the best products on the market and I have used Sony products for the past 20 years. But I do have to say that Sony does have a strong air of argonance to their business practices. It makes our jobs a little tougher than they should.

So does that mean no one has used this camera with the 24p feature in FCP?

You can capture the 24P footage as 60i and reverse telecine with Cinema Tools. Annoying yes, but works fine.
