I’m trying to find opinions regarding the use of the Sony HVR-A1U in low light situations. Although I’ve run several searches, I haven’t come up with anything and would really appreciate hearing from any A1U users in the forum. My daughter plays volleyball and the high school gyms are notorious for their poor lighting. I will also be shooting my son skydiving, but light won’t be an issue there.

Most of the reviews I’ve read have been favorable and it is currently number one on my list. If I can verify that it has acceptable low light performance I will make the purchase.

    Thanks,

-The A1 can’t be considered “good” in any low-light situation. it’s a great camera (we have 4) and use them in skydiving and other aerial sports with regularity. One of my A1’s easily has 2000 hours on it. They’re terrific, when you have good light. Absent good lighting, it’s a weak camera, and the noise of CMOS will bite you, guaranteed.
This was shot (aerial) with the A1U (7 of them on helmets).

    Hi Spot,

Whoever filmed that did a great job. Man, that was the ultimate.

Thanks Spot, I really like this camera but I may have to go back to the drawing board since it’s low light performance will be an issue. It’s always something…..

i am extremely new to the film making scene so exuse any ignorance that i might display, but i have been doing alot of research on the A1u and i have heard this same story from alot of people about the low light capability. My question is how bad? cause right now i record with a $300 dollar JVC hard drive camera so you have to understand that just about anything would be better than what im use to. I would like to in at least video a candle lit room?? I asume that the a1u would not be the camera for that? If not what about the VX2100 (3CCD) would this be a camera that could video in candle lit room? I hate sacrifising HD for SD but i would if the low light is that bad. could you please help direct me?
P.S. my price range is in the GL-2 A1u range.
