Hello, I’m new to editing HD (previously shot film, and then handed the EDL from FinalCut over to the post-production house).

    I need to:
    1. Import Sony EX1 1080i HD footage to Final Cut 4.5.
    2. Edit in Final Cut 4.5.
    3. Render the final film back in 1080i.

Q: I have been able to import the 1080i as DV via XDCAM EX Clip Browser, so that the clips can be imported to Final Cut 4.5.
Which is better: RAW DV or AVI DV?

Q: After I have finished editing the downconverted DV clips, how do I then use the original 1080i EX footage to render the final version of the film? The Sony EX1 clips are all embedded in folders – do I need to export them all to some HD format that FCP can see?

Thanks very much for any tips.

I don’t believe FCP 4.5 will work with XDCAM EX. You should consider upgrading.

    Thanks for your reply.
My understanding is that one should be able to edit off-line with footage down-converted to DV, so that editing will go faster. Then one uses the Edit Decision List to put together the original HD footage.

I am able to export the Sony EX1 clips to DV format, and then import that DV into Final Cut 4.5. Can the Sony EX1 HD clips simply be exported to some more universal format so that Final Cut can use the EDL to render HD? I know that FCP 4.5 cannot directly import the Sony EX1 clips, but surely there is some non-proprietary HD format that they can be exported to?

    Thanks, again.

[Nancy Kiang] “My understanding is that one should be able to edit off-line with footage down-converted to DV, so that editing will go faster. Then one uses the Edit Decision List to put together the original HD footage.”

That’s true if your timecode & frame rate match. If they don’t then your online editor will have to match your edit shot for shot by eye.

You know, Nancy, you can jump through hoops to make this work with FCP 4.5, or you can simply upgrade to FCP 6.x and it will just work. How valuable is your time? How important is this project?
