Sony EX-1 hands on with manual zoom
I was at the DV Expo in LA and had a few minutes with the EX-1. When I toggled the camera over to manual “mechanical” control of the zoom, I initially felt disappointed…as the mechanical zoom didn’t seem dampened enough and it would be hard to feather a soft start/stop even at slow speeds.
The Sony guide did show the the zoom motor could be programmed for an extremely slow crawl…and I did not get a chance to work the “Shot Transition” mode which can do a soft start/stop.
Has anyone else used the mechanical zoom and the mechanical focus and how did they feel to you? Do you think you will be able to get the right amount of slow ramp without any play? This kind of quality is the most difficult to find on the sub-10K camcorders.
I was very impressed with everything else about the camera.

Just got my EX1 and there’s definitely going to be a need for a good lens controller for this camera.
