Sony Ate MY Critical Project File !!! WTF!!!
If ever there’s help through this site, boy do I need it now. I was knee deep in a project…client coming over in an hour…just putting the final touches on a Kiwanis football game edit, when Song Vegas shut down and I got an error message. I have received these messages before, from time to time. And, I just go back and open my project again. In this case, thought, the project file is GONE!!!! When I re-opened Vegas, it asked me if I wanted to open the system saved project, which I assume was the same project as that which I was last working, BUT it wouldn’t open…got another file message. I AM AT A TOTAL LOSS…with a client coming over in minutes. I guess, worst case, I start the whole project over again (only about 10 hours of work)…I’ve been up all night as it is. Of course, my client is going to be pissed and we’re both going to have serious egg on our face as he contracted me to do the work for a larger client. I’m just trying to figure out where the file is and get back to the project. I always manually save the project every five minutes or so, especially when I get near the end of the project to render, etc. Never have I lost a file…it’s just not there. And, there’s NO WAY I erased. Does anyone have any useful input because I’m literally about to jump off a bridge. Please save me because I want to live. But, this, is the ultimate SHOW STOPPER…I can’t imagine anything worse. PLEASE HELP.

Maybe I should add that I can see the faded out BAK and VEG file of the Project File…but there’s no project file.

you say you do a manual save every 5 minutes or so….
are you sure you are looking in the correct folder?
or you can Try saving a current project and see where
its saving it and you can look there if the project is there.Steve Rhoden

Andre, what do you mean when you say “the project is gone”?
*.veg and *.veg.bak are your project files.
What you’re supposed to be able to do with the *.veg.bak file is to rename it (eg. *-new.veg) and drop the .bak portion of the name.
Then you open up that file. -
thanks for answering but i’m still suffering, and a lot. when i manually save, i just click the floppy disc, i don’t change the name of the file. i’m sure i’m looking in the correct folder. i know my work…i’ve been married to this project all night…literally. in the folder where the file is supposed, i can see the veg.bak and veg.tmp folders with the same name as the project file, but the project is gone. i searched my drives and it’s not there. i have my settings set to automatically open last open project. when i tried to open the auto saved version, it wouldn’t open…got another error message. this my sound stupid, but i don’t know where to look for the autosaved files. i’ve been on the forum to no avial. please help me as i’m going to lose this contract if i can’t produce video today, and i don’t have time to re-edit the project again. PLEASE help, i’m really in dire straights.

ok. so i just went to preference and i now see where the temp files are going to. wish me luck. if i can get something back, i may be able to salvage my work.

mike: thanks for your input. what i mean when i say that i can see the veg.bak files, i’m looking at an all white file, like faded out, a file foot print, if you will, doesn’t look normal like my “normal” project files which don’t show an extension. sorry but i don’t know how to better explain. i’m going to look through my temporary folder. i think the file is currupted for some reason, but if i can just get ONE good last saved version, i can deliver something to these guys and try to keep my job!

well, guys. i guess i have good news and bad news. good news is i learned and now know very well where sony vegas saves the auto saved files. i was able to see which file i lost by looking at the date. so, the bad news, is the most recent auto save, closest to the time of my crash, there was a file, but it’s corrupted, and won’t open. the only other file was from several hours earlier but at least if i charge on it now, there’s a chance that i can salvage my relationships. i just hope it doesn’t do it again. i guess i’m going to manually save and change the file name in the process.

Andre, the faded look might mean that it’s a “hidden” file.
To “unhide” it, double-click My Computer, select Tools – Folder Options – View and select the Show hidden files and folders option. -
Glad to hear that you got at least some of it back.
I’m sure you don’t have the time now but, if you’re running Vegas Pro 8, do yourself a favour and grab Edward Troxel’s AutoSave script for later installation.
