Im up in the air on my next RAID purchase.
I’ve been leaning towards the Sonnet’s Fusion D800, but I cant ignore Walter’s recommendation and Bob’s stamp of approval on MaxxDigital’s EVO systems. They both look very robust, affordable and reliable.

What’s puzzling is my research has led me to believe they both ship with ATTO’s R-380 SAS/SATA RAID HBA. If so, I wonder if MaxxDigital’s Atto cards ship with different firmware or if they in fact ship with different cards. (Atto’s literature alludes to future support of RAID 6… but…

MaxxDigital touts RAID 0,1,5, and 6
    Sonnet D800 touts RAID 0, 1, 4 (DV RAID), 5, 10, 50, and JBOD groups

I would love any input on:

    1) What HBA cards the MaxxDigital EVO HD ship with?
    2) Any input/reviews on the RAID configuration software for both Sonnet’s Fusion D800 and MaxxDigital’s EVO HD (I think they both use Atto configuration software?)
    3) Anybody really using RAID6?
    4) Lastly, anyone know what drives ship with the Sonnet D800’s these days? MaxxDigitals?

    Peace to yaz!

Depending on what model you get, it ships with different drives. All of them are tested for reliability. You pay a premium for those drives, but it’s worth it.

Walter will tell you about MaxxDigital.

Multiple manufacturers use the Atto R-380 as it’s a very solid card. It’s the same card no matter which manufacturer uses it and the firmware / software is the same.

I know that the 8TB Maxx EVO HD units ship with the 1TB Hitachi drives as we have two of those units here. Not sure what the other models ship with. You can give Ron a call over at Maxx and they’ll fill you in on all details as to which drive models are used in which array.

We’re running RAID 5 in both of our units, no plans to switch to RAID 6.
