Very cute little device. Been loving the original KiPro as well- so the Ki Pro Mini is a welcome addition. $1,995 may be out of some folks’ price range, but if you can swing it this totally rocks.

I’m seriously thinking of selling my EX-1 and my NANO-flash.
I have to stop filming for the next few months. I think i can sell my stuff now for a good price.
When back to work I will get me one of those Prores recorder, and hopefully SONY or PANA will have a decent camera to put in front. Something like the NEX -VG 10 but with the EX controls.

It seems we are moving to specialized and modular gear. Remember the days when a camera was a head and you bought the back/recorder you needed. Those days seem to be here again.Sony is expanding its EX series and the range is 1/2″ to 2/3″ chips and is either CMOS or CCD. They are also starting into the large chip market with the VG10 and it’s clear to me they’ll have a “pro” model within months. Will one supplant the other or maybe they serve two different purposes? I think the latter is more likely although I dream of the “do it all” camera.
Canon comes out with a codec Sony uses in higher end cameras and includes it in their base pro cameras with XF 300 and now 100 series cameras which are all fixed lens 1/3″ chip MXF MPEG-2 4:2:2 50Mbps. Yet their HDSLR line keeps becoming more video friendly but use H.264 (at 44mbps apparently). They still do horrible line skipping though. The XF 100s are designed to be “dual mounted” for 3D work.
Panasonic is coming to market with both a large chip camera as well as another camera with built in 3D.
They’re using variations on AVC (H.264) with and without GOP.And as this thread indicates, several companies are moving into the attached recorder market. It seems MPEG-2 MXF and Apple ProRes are doing battle here.
We are seeing specialization and modularity growing. The manufacturers are diversifying. ROI on a camera purchase has gotten incredibly short if one is to remain competitive. Prices really aren’t cheaper given how frequently one may purchase newer models. So many are in sell/buy mode.
It’s interesting that one talks of selling gear when only taking a few months hiatus but camera development is moving that quickly. We see the IBC announcements and by next NAB they’ll be another round.
By next NAB Sony, Panasonic, Canon will be well into large chip interchangeable lens cameras. All with very different directions in that market though. Yet all three are making leaps forward in their 1/3″ – 2/3″ cameras as well. We may soon be like the still photographer with 3 cameras slung around their necks. Heck even the division between still and video has melded.
Maybe instead of selling and buying cameras, it’s time to invest in “camera futures” as a business.

Really interesting times to come.
What I see is that the arrival of those new recorders open the door for small companies to enter in the camera market.
HD/SD-SDI or HDMI Out is all that a camera will need to be “Universal”.
Hopefully the monopoly of the formats may finish. Is time for the big companies to start to give the people what people needs, no just what is convenient for their company plans.

The Ninjua looks really cool but only HDMI in? Isn’t that a little delicate for a connector? Seems like it could get knocked loose very easily. Also, no support for 30p recording. I still want one now though!

And it’s an internal hard drive rather than CF cards.
Alas something has to give to keep the price down to about $1000.
It can really help HDSLR users as an affordable way to record ProRes instead of heavily compressed H.264. if you an EX1R which has HDMI out. -
Yeah, I agree about the hard drive. I would not want to trust a paying gig on hard drive reliance. I think the industry has moved on to the flash card concept for reliabality. Hmmm, maybe someone will come up with a compromise.
