  • Some Notes on FCPX while using

I am on a large project and trying out FCPX. All footage is ProRes.

There are many things I like but I thought I might keep a few notes as I work.
Perhaps this might help someone or be interesting to them.

    1. Sluggish response. The skimmer has an unreal lighting fast response time. Not so much with other interface elements. For instance, pressing the space bar to play and stop gets you a stupid half second delay each time. Very disappointing.

    2. I have a bunch of clips that I don’t want to listen to so I am turning off the audio tracks as I come to each clip. If you don’t carefully re-click on the clip after doing this, the audio still plays. Lame.

    3. Many times I will play a clip but it doesn’t register or something and never plays in the viewer–but I can hear it! Terrible Beta level crap.

    4. The fact that no window remembers (or sometimes partially remembers its state) in the event browser is very short sighted. As editor, we could previously get a nice additional clue spatially to organize. That is all gone here.

    To be continued…

This post may be more suited to the FCPX forum 🙂

[Steve Connor] “This post may be more suited to the FCPX forum :)”

    🙂

That said, this is still the “do” forum rather than the “talk” forum, where some folks admit haven’t actually tried to edit a project with it.

Trying and not liking is always fine, and I know that I’m interested to find any answers that people may have had for the issues, which is of course right in this forum’s wheelhouse…

    thx,
    tw

Yeah, I am liking a lot of stuff but I thought notes might help someone just to know if a behavior is expected. It is certainly what I would like to read here.

That other forum seems to JUST be the bashing forum. I understand that. I would really love to have Randy Ubillos sitting right here beside me so that I could occasionally crash his face into the desk.

    1. no sluggish response to spacebar here.
    2. and 3. I can confirm….dotzero release problems that are annoying and actually betalevel as you say.
    4. it taught me to get organized in the eventbrowser: set in and out and give it a keytag (press “F” to mark it green, which you then can select or better give it a real keyword for this I-O-selection). but yes, it should remember the last I/O i set on any given clip. and i am sure it will in the next version.

u might wanna check our blog about a larger project we are currently in
    https://fcpxmegatest.blogspot.com/
at 5500 clips in the eventlibrary right now and FCPX still works fine (mostly)

    Thanks Alban! Love the blog!

Based on your kind feedback, I did a check and I see that (under the playback prefs) you can choose better performance and get the spacebar to respond better. I am using a fairly kick ass machine (6 core 3.33 32GB RAM) but removable firewire media (which is typical for most jobs).

    New Note:

    5. The fact that clips lose their in and outs the moment you leave them..how can that be a good idea? I am marking for selects as you discuss above but let me say that this is one more step unnecessary in 7.

Apologies for my original reply, just concerned this forum doesn’t descend into FCP bashing like the “other” forum.

Lance, it is a BAD idea that FCPX forgets the last I/O i did set on any clip.
But by HAVING TO adjust I actually saved a lot of time later in my project, because I can now see several I/O on many longer clips as green selections on them. No more subclipping and definitely helps with larger projects.

But in version 10.1 they HAVE TO allow the bins to remember the I/O.

    Thanks Alban,

Agreed about having multiple selects on a single clip and I am benefiting from this also.
But in a situation where you just want to look at another clip for a moment (for instance) and you lose your I/O on the previously viewed clip…this is pretty dumb.

Also must say that the way the each event window COMPLETELY resets itself whenever you switch to another one makes organization harder and is just plain bad.

I will make more notes in this thread when I continue work on the project.

this “forgetting every setting” is throughout FCPX and even Motion! it clearly is annoying and costs time and is definitely a result of a rushed product. I see no reason why this shouldn´t be fixed in vewrsions “dot-one”.
