    Hey Guys,

I’m come from an AVID-Meridien Media Composer background.

I’ve changed jobs and am now in Final Cut. I’d love to add AVID to my bag of tools. But I have no experience with anything newer than Meridien hardware based AVID.

If I wanted to add something comparable to that version of Media Composer, what am I looking at?

Do new AVID’s run without dedicated hardware?

Can I use any of the same hardware for my FCP setup?

    Matrox MXO2
    FSI 17″ HD monitor
    LaCie 8TB Big Quadra
    MacPro 2xquadcore – 16GB RAM
    2x 24″ LED Mac displays

    What are your thoughts?

Yes, new Avid’s run without hardware. And you can easily add hardware. (though it’s not as cheap as the FCP side)

The software is now $2,500, or 295 for the student version. Since there is no dongle anymore, you can actually download it for free, and run it for 30 days in evaluation mode.

There are a LOT of big changes since you last used it. The most recent is the ability to mix and match frame rates, and have it done properly.

    Have fun.

YOu can’t run Avid using hardware designed for FCP…just FYI. But The Nitris DX isn’t NEARLY as expensive as the Meridian or Adrenaline hardware was. I think that the MOJO is overpriced for what it offers. But you can run the Media Composer software without hardware, and capture many firewire formats, like DV, HDV and DVCPRO HD, and deal with all sorts of tapeless formats…natively.

The software is now very affordable, and VERY powerful. Even without hardware.

GETTING ORGANIZED WITH FINAL CUT PRO DVD…don’t miss it.
