  • Solution needed for Final Cut file usage in AE

I am still having trouble trying to get a video file from Final Cut to work well in AE.

My editor has supplied me with compressed AND non-compressed 5 – 7 minute video files from Final Cut.

I need to use these files as a reference (both visual and audio) so I can create graphics.

The problem remains that I cannot get the video files to work properly in AE. When I import them I hit the spaxce bar to laet them play and render. They move in very very slow motion which is fine while rendering. However, what I notice is that the green render bar does not extend over the entire file. Once it reaches rough 10 seconds it starts to move along with the reast of file. So it ends up being around 10 seconds of normal speed video following the track marker. Plus, i can’t get the audio to play while the video is playing.

Should this be able to work? 5 -7 minute videos with audio playing at normal speed? If so, how do I get this to heppen?

    Thank you!!!

Wow 7-8 min in after effects is crazy talk – first question what are you doing to the footage or grading comping etc – second question where is the file stored ? On system drive – FireWire etc . AE is meant to be a shot by shot composer so chunky files it Hates – also check how much ram you have as this can be sucked up in the ram preview – I suggest break the footage down into chincks – do your ae magic – export and stich back in your fav editor !

[Rudy Shalamar] “My editor has supplied me with compressed AND non-compressed”

Yes, but what codec and what frame size/format?
AE has a RAM preview function, not a realtime playback function. AE has no audio playback capabilities except for audio preview.
As the others have tried to say, you’re in way over your head. You cannot sell your services or start projects like this without knowing how After Effects works and, buddy, AE is a really complicated application. Takes many of us several months to get past the most basic functions.

No need to worry “Buddy”. I’m not selling my services. I work for myself.

I was told AE was perfect for my current project’s needs by someone on this forum but it turns AE is not the right program. I’m not using it to edit video or even keep video. Just trying to find a program where I can insert video AND audio and use a reference to build the graphics around. The project is all based on timing (audio and video cues). The video/audio tracks would not be part of the final export, just used as reference.

Looks like I need to find a program better suited for my needs. There may not be a program that can do this, so I may have to do it it all in fincal cut.

If anyone knows a program under which you can preview video and audio in real time while building graphics to suit based on timing cues, please let me know.

    Thank you

AE works fine for this but if you want more of a “real-time” feel head over to Motion.

Use FCP or Premiere or any other non-linear for this – not AE – whoever advised you regarding AE does not know what they are talking about.
