snapping video when moving it up or down layers
Hi again with another FCP->PP user question …
I want to move a number of clips to the track below where they currently are. I want to be able to do it quickly, and with it locked so that the clips don’t nudge left or right. In FCP I’d just hold shift I think while I dragged them down… or used the keyboard shortcut. I realise from other posts there is no keyboard shortcut to move clips up or down layers.. but my question is, is there a way to make it snap so that the clips don’t move in time. With normal snap, the clips sometimes snap to another clip a few frames away.

Seems to me you just have to select the clip in the timeline and drag it down or up. As long as snapping is on, it stays in position.

Could you not move the current time indicator to the beginning of the clip (page up/ page down) and then drag it down? It may not be as fast as a keyboard shortcut, but I have found that to work really well for me.

To add to this very old post, what you need is the ‘Nudge clip selection up’ and ‘nudge clip selection down’ command. On PC, the standard shortcut is alt-up arrow or alt-down arrow. If you open keyboard shortcuts you can search for nudge to see what the shortcut is on whichever system you are using.

This has ‘bugged’ me as well – I can grab regions/clips and move them to another track and there is displayed on the screen a ‘time adjustment amount’ which should read 00:00:00:00 if you’re actually in-line with where you’re moving it from. In a popular audio editing software package I’m familiar with, we can hold down Cmd- while we drag and that clip is LOCKED to time, so even the slightest sideways movement of the mouse will not time-adjust. Doesn’t seem you can do that ‘quickly’ in Premiere and I find myself putting way too much time into moving things from track to track worried about shifting time sync.
YES it does appear that (mac) Opt-up / down arrows will move clips accordingly. Keyboard shortcut that of course can be customized.
