I’m trying to align shapes in Motion but they snap to where Motion thinks they should be and not where I want them. I know how to turn snap off in Final Cut but not Motion. Any advice?

Two great options: Turn snapping off temporarily while moving the object in the Canvas by holding down the Command key (apple key)

Or. Go up to View (below the Inspector button), un check Dynamic Guides. That will make it so you have no snapping at all.

Hope this helps and best of luck.

Or the N key to toggle snapping on or off.
