smoothing distortion?
I recently recorded some sound for a student short film, but have found since importing it that it is distorted. I am confused as to why this was, because the levels when I was recording the sound were set very low. At the time I was concerned about the sound distorting, because I could hear it in the head phones (so I just kept turning the lebvels down, til it was barely audible), but it is still distorted. Like I say the levels aren’t anywhere near clipping level, but still on particular parts (the dialogue of one of our actress’) sound ‘screechy’. Could this have been a broken mic even? Is there anything that can be done to ease this in post. Can anything clever be done with EQ’s. I know there’s probably not much-but anything to tone it down slightly will help. Just for information it was recorded on a Senheisser gun mic (not sure which model exactly), through a Sony PD170.

sorry I’m not 100% sure what you mean. The way it was set up was that the control for the mic input we were using was set to about 2 or 3 out of ten (although the PD 170’s don’t actually have a number gauge-just a stupid solid bar). Thats why the actually audio in waveform sits very low-but is still squared off in places as if it has been clipped. Sorry if thats no further help, but I can make a more useful reply when I understand what you mean! Thanks, Joe
