Smoke gathering?
Posted by Jak on May 4, 2005 at 7:52 pmThis goes along with my previous post today. Next step: we are trying to create pipe smoke that builds over the slot machine and fills the entire frame until it is diffcult to see through it…. and then on a sound cue the pipe smoke gets sucked back from where it came (in 1/2 a second). I’ve been playing around with Particular, but can’t seem to get the effect working properly…. plus, it’s taking forever for my G5 to render even one frame…. like 2 minutes.
Anyone can point me in the right direction, I’d appreciate it.
Thanks,
JAK
(ps> I also posted this in the Trapcode section)

May 5, 2005 at 3:26 amIt is normal that it’s taking forever for your G5 to render even one frame 2 minutes. AE particular always require much time to render.I think it is a little hard for AE to immitate very real-look smoke.I don’t know how you made the smoke. But if you firstly creat a particular system effect ,then find some pictures of smoke and add them into you composition as the layer map.If there is to much or too large mass of smoke, try reducing the number of particulars emited per second and adjust the their size. Finally you can get a smoke-like effect.
By the way ,another thing I want to say is that If I was you I would make the smoke with a 3D software like 3DMAX or Maya. There are many examples in many forums from witch you can leran how to make smoke easily.
However,If you had got a software named ParticleIllusion, you will find it is very easy to make smoke with that software.
If you fail to make the smoke with all the sugestion I have given,I can give you my last sugestion:Just take a shot of smoke then fuse it with your video.Don’t ask me HOW CAN I GET SMOKE,there is smoke everywhere in our daily life.
after all I want to say that AE is mainly a software for fusion, not a software for everything. So don’t sxpect that it could make everything for you.In many cases it’s very important to use a 3D software or even to take a shot.
That’s my idea, wish to be helpful.

May 5, 2005 at 4:54 amThank you for your response. I agree. I will try Particle Illusion… not enough time to learn a 3D program for this project… if that doesn’t work, then we’ll have to shoot the smoke billowing on black…. and pray.
Cheers,

May 5, 2005 at 9:24 amIt seems I overlooked 2 plugins which can make smoke in AE.Trapcode Particular and DE smoke are plugins for AE used to make smoke for videos.
But I feel Particle Illusion can deel it better and quicker.Since I am in my leisure hours,I tried making an footage like that.It has been uploaded to this link:https://www.seaair.com.cn/smoke.mov
Is that similar with what you wanted? -

May 5, 2005 at 3:05 pmYeah. Kinda like that. But, WAYYYYY slower. It needs to build over 2 minutes… then suck back in 2 seconds. Also, the fractals (?) need to be WAYYY more subtle. Kinda like this slow building thing that you don’t really notice until 1 minutes in… it’s getting “foggier” and wafting…. like cigarette smoke. Any ideas?
Did you use Particule Illusion for this?
(btw, it looks excellent for chimney smoke…. like really good!)JAK

May 6, 2005 at 12:14 amWe ended up shooting it in a black box…. way easier. It took an hour…. verses the 3 I spent yesterday trying to imitate smoke in Particular. 🙂 Some things still are better to shoot LIVE. I’ll mark “cigarette smoke” (detail) as one of them.
