can someone tell me what are AE smart masks and how and for what purpose do i use them?

Indeed.
By the way, there are no such things as “smart masks”, J&J. “Smart mask interpolation” (SMI) is a different way of interpolating the position of mask vertices between mask shape keyframes. Normally, each moves in a straight line, but SMI creates new, supposedly more intelligent keyframes between those kayframes you created.
It takes some practice to understand how it works.
