I’m wondering if anyone has tried to reproduce this effect with any success. I’ve managed to find a tutorial that covers how to make the “eye flare” part of the effect. I have not found anything covering how to make the actual “beams.”

If you’re not familiar with Smallville, allow me to explain.

Traditionally, the Superman Heat Vision effect has been shown as red beams projecting from the eyes. In the show Smallville, the beams are almost colorless. They are visible due to the beam heating up the air and causing light to bend. Similar to how on a really hot day, you see “waves” above paved roads.

This isn’t the highest-res image, but click here and scroll to the bottom of the page for an image from the show.

Any ideas on how to reproduce this effect with AE 6.5?

Try creating beams then using them as a displacement map to displace the background footage with the displacement map effect.

would you mind posting a link to the tutorial that shows how to make eyes glow? I have an upcoming project that will require me to do something similar. I have a good idea of what I’m going to do but someone else’s approach might give me some ideas.

    cheers
