Hi guys – sorry a bit of a noob here. I’ve mostly been editing in FCP/FCP x but I recently did a job on premiere cs6.

The job was an online edit so involved a basic color grade with the fast color corrector and rgb curves, and then a vignette using a circle layer. The timeline was only 6 minutes but render times were excruciating! And when we came to play out export times were also pretty long – even using the preview files.

The footage was a mix of avchd and xdcam and the machine was a 2012 mac pro/32 gig ram/ radon 5770 graphics card running snow leopard.

I have another project coming up with the same client soon and would like to find out why the render/export times are so slow… Is it as simple as filters on mpeg compression ? Is there anything I can do to make it faster? Would it be better to convert the avchd to xdcam and work with one format?

    Hi Angeline,

You didn’t mention actual render times. On average, you can expect a render to take at least twice as long as your timeline.

Things can get out of hand with effects, although it doesn’t seems that you had anything significant in there. Any effect that uses blur, or most Red Giant filters will slow you down.

Finally, if you are not resizing footage/pictures in your timeline, and if your export resolution also matches your timeline, you can uncheck maximum render quality, which should really speed things up.

    Thanks for the reply.

Renders were definitely much longer than twice playback.. like about 30 min for a 6 min timeline. Some of the dissolves took like 5min or longer….

I also forgot to mention that we were working off two firewire 800 drives. Could this have been the bottleneck? Any other tips to make things go faster next time?
