“And we’re all learning a lot about this along the way. The documentary producer in DC discovered that the P2 Store has some serious file transfer speed issues if it’s being copied from the P2 Store into the Mac. He reported that it took approximately an hour per gigabyte to move files into his Mac-based edit system. Others who had PC-based edit systems reported normal transfer speeds.”

Is there any solution to this problem? What technical issue is causing this. I can’t imagine using a PC laptop to import things if the final destination is FCP. Maybe you could do a dual partition on a MacBook Pro, run windows on one of the partitions? Still seems like a giant hassle.

I found that my transfer speeds increased when I plugged the P2 Store directly into the G5, rather than the keyboard. Through the keyboard, it took 2 or 3 hours to transfer an 8 gig card (we went out on a shoot, so I wasn’t there to time it), through the front port on the mac, it took 15 or 20 minutes.

I found this to be the case when using my g4 desktop. It turns out that the desktop only has USB 1, noy USB 2 which is much faster. When I plug it into my 12″ powerbook it transfers about 1g per minute. Try transferring it on a powerbook to an external drive.

If you have an open PCI slot, you could add a USB2 card to your desktop G4.

G4 desktops can easily /cheaply be upgraded to USB 2.0 by adding the appropriate pci card. I’ve never used a P2 store on my G4 so I can’t vouch for the transfer speed.
