Slow FCP?
Posted by Ben Watson on March 8, 2009 at 10:24 pmOk, something is not right.
History: Been using adobe CS3 suite (on PC) for video production, but wanted to go with something more powerful. Purchased a Mac Pro with dual quad cores, FC Studio 2, 6 gig ram…
I was rendering videos faster on my old PC with CS3. What gives? is FCP not utilizing stuff right? I changed the setting under the preferences to render faster, and my scratch disk is off main drive…
I render a m4v, DVD, and flv every week, and it is taking forever.
Not to mention, video playback sucks. It skips a lot.Yes, I am a newbie on Mac, bear with me…

March 8, 2009 at 11:38 pmBen- You are entering a tough transition period- new platform, operating system and NLE software. You have the right tools. Trust me when I say it is best to forget the old way of doing things. Final Cut does things differently. Proceed with an open mind and the right attitude and you will be rolling in a couple of weeks.
Here is an excellent link at the Ken Stone website with a tutorial done by Andrew Balis on starting a Final Cut project:

I agree with Jerry that there are many new things that you have to learn.
Many new tools that you have to learn how to manage. You will run to learn how to use FC, Compressor etc, but don’t forget about the System.
No one application will run well if your System is not optimized.
MacOS is rock solid, but it need some regular maintenance.
This will make the difference of a happy and smooth experience with Mac or a life of headaches.
Keep your System Permissions and your HDs directories clean is the way. And don’t think that because
you installed everything fresh, your Mac is ready for the best performance.
When you install your System + QT + FCS, your System is a real mess.
Get your self Diskwarrior, TechTools or DriveWizard.
People when they start to have problem with FC start blame FC. But only having your System in good conditions you can be sure that the missfunctions comes from the applications and not from the system.
This is is my best advice for any body running a Mag. Whatever the job or the application used.

March 9, 2009 at 3:05 pmThanks for the response. I did what the mentioned website said, even rerendered some of my graphics to match the project/seq format, and it seemed to render better.
What can you tell me regarding speed internally (ie scratch drives, firewire vs other drive formats, memory, CPU utilization, etc?) I house all my footage over a gigabit NAS, and it worked usably on the PC, even pushing P2 info, but seems a bit sluggish on the MAC.
I am looking into getting the tech tools that Rafael mentioned, but is there a free alternative?
Thanks so much for the help. This forum has been a lot of help already!

Before rendering I like to open the Activity Monitor. Its gives you a lot of informantion about the performance of your machine.
to test the performance of your drivers you can download the AJA System Test. An application that comes with the driver of the cards. You can download it free.[Ben Watson] “I am looking into getting the tech tools that Rafael mentioned, but is there a free alternative? “
No free alternative, but believe me you won’t ever regret the money spent.

March 11, 2009 at 12:54 amPart of your problem is that the current version of FCP does not address all of the available CPUs in your desktop tower.
