Slow copy on large number of small files
I have a QNAP TS453 BT3. Connected to a Mac Book Pro via Thunderbolt 3, BM speed test gives me decent figures for read and write. Like 500+ MB/sec read and 300+ MB/sec write.
Copying a 5 GB file from MBP Int SSD to QNAP and back is so fast I can’t even measure it. Even folders with tens of files totalling 100GB, copy from MBP int SSD to QNAP at 200-300 MB/sec (as observed in Activity monitor).
But, if I try to copy a folder with a large number of files, it crawls. Like, I’m copying a folder of 5.3 GB with 300,000 very small files in it. That copy moves at a snail’s pace of 5-10 MB/sec or less, and shows over an hour to copy 5GB, and eventually finishes it in 2 hrs.
5GB in 2 hrs if the number of files is large. But 5GB in a few sec if its a couple of files.
What’s the way to speed up data transfer of a large number of small files to/from QNAP?
I’m connecting over Thunderbolt 3 as SMB. I have SMB signing off. I have QTS 4.5.4 installed. There’s 8GB RAM and its a QNAP TS-453BT3.
