I’ve run two runs of cat-6 cable in my home/office, each about 100ft, and it seems that neither my cable modem nor my router are sending a signal strong enough to establish an internet connection on either of the two computers 100ft down the line. In other words, whether I go direct from the cable modem to one of the computers, or go from the router to one or both computers, the I am getting a green ethernet light, but still no internet connection.

BTW, as a test I found it will work just fine with a 50ft cable, but that doesn’t really help me in this situation. My understanding is that cat-6 cable should be able to handle a run of 300ft on a network, so it seems like 100ft should be a no-brainer. Does anyone have any suggestions?

    TIA,
    David

Try running a 50 footer from the cable modem to the router, then run another 50 footer from the router to the computer. Essentially, you’ll be using the router as a repeater. Might not work, but it would be interesting to see!

Thanks Arnie, I suspect that might work, but in this case it wouldn’t really help, as my new abode is a long, ranch style house, and computers need to be opposite ends of the building, each 100ft from the central cable access point.

    Any other ideas?

Sounds like your 100′ cat-6 cables might be bad or perhaps are cross over cables?

Could it be that just the one 100ft cable you tried happens to be bad?

Make sure that your cable isn’t running parallel to any AC electrical cables or conduits, because the cable can pick up stray current by induction. It could also be a grounding problem.

A quick & dirty solution might be to set up an ethernet switch (not a hub) in the middle of the 100ft run and use 2 50ft cables instead, which will help to re-generate the signal. They’re often on sale for $10-20.

[Jeremy Garchow] “Sounds like your 100′ cat-6 cables might be bad or perhaps are cross over cables?”

Good guess Jeremy. After two days of exhaustive dicking-around, we finally ruled out everything except bad cable, and so we pulled it, reinstalled new, tested, double shielded Cat-6 cable, and all was good. The moral of the story is, don’t buy your cable at Fry’s unless you know exactly what you’re getting.

It was all bad through and through. Rather infuriating waste of time too.

    [Mark Raudonis] “Airport? “

I tried Airport, but the house has brick walls, including many of the interior walls. So, wireless won’t adequately provide coverage of the entire place as necessary.

Failure was not an option, so it just became a question of checking everything. We’d run the cable all over and tied it down, and it was the last thing we thought could be our problem. But alas, we were wrong.

Meanwhile, Fry’s refunded my money, but they refused to reimburse my time.

Sounds like the cable was wired improperly. If the balanced signal isn’t wired to the same twisted pair (even though it ends upn the same pin on the other end), the performance of the cable will be degraded.

    Eric,

Can you please elaborate a little more on that, if possible? You may be correct, but I want to be sure before mentioning it to my friend who assured me he knew how to do the wiring.

    Thanks,
    David
