i captured a tape the other day that stopped after about every second of screentime as it searched for a new inpoint due to a dropped frame. so i turned off “abort capture on dropped frames” and did a “capture now”. FCP captured the whole show (dropped frames and all), but of course when i made it into a DVD, it played back with all the video stutters where the dropped frames were. audio was smooth as silk, and the DVD didn’t choke on the playback, but it is basically worthless to watch.

are there any workarounds to capturing it better in the first place? when watching the original tape, it plays fine, so i’m a bit surprised that the DVD conversion wasn’t as smooth.

If you capture the media with dropped frames in the media file, your result in DVD SP will happen every time.

The way to avoid this is faster drives to capture to… 99% of the time this is the problem with dropping frames during capture.

    thanks Jerry!

i see i had captured this to my LaCie drive instead of my main media drive (which was full). that seems to have made all the difference in the world! : )

    Mortimer,

If it appears fine when playing back you’re probably dropping fields, not frames. Look at the video field by field (its in the manual) and you will probably spot the problems fileds fairly easily. Digital Heaven makes a great tool for fixing all kinds of dropouts, including dropped fields, called DH Dropout, that would be helpful to you.
