  • Simple timeline function question

Posted by Sean Winn on March 31, 2011 at 6:56 pm

Hi, new to fcp and am working through some DVD tutorials. Trying to finish a simple project at the moment and cutting up some audio in the timeline. Can’t find the answer after searching online and in the help menus…

How do I turn off the function where the timeline automatically deletes spaces when you delete a clip? Trying to keep the pieces separate on the timeline so I can arrange them, but it keeps snapping (this is not a question about the ‘N’ function – turning that off doesn’t address this question..

    Thanks for any assistance,
    Sean

The difference is in which ‘delete’ key you use. Use the backspace key to delete the clip and leave a hole. Use the delete key (by the ‘end’ key) to delete and close gap. You can also do the latter by hitting ‘shift backspace’ (or ‘fn backspace’ on a laptop).

    Cheers,

    Dan,
Thanks for the time – that makes perfect sense now. I discovered after I posted that I was indeed free to move clips wherever I wanted for arrangements sake, but still didn’t know about the difference in the delete keys.
    Thanks again,
    Sean
