Shutter on or off when Shooting 30p?
Does the shutter need to be on when shooting 30fps in the Film Rec Mode? Does it help with focus?
Just curious. I have talked to several DPs and Techs and get mixed answers. One swears that he shoots 30p all the time without the shutter and has no problems i.e. focus. Top tech claims shutter should always be on when shooting Progressive no matter the frame rate. That he has noticed a difference with focus with shutter off.
Is there a ONE answer?

I advise always turning the shutter on when shooting at 24 or 30p; otherwise you’ll have an unusual shutterspeed that renders motion too blurry. It is safe to consider 1/48th. (at 24p), 1/60th (at 30p) and 1/60th (shutter off at 60p) the “default” shutter speed. This is accomplished at 24 and 30 by setting shutter on and at 180 degrees (or half).

So what about shooting 60p,for the purpose of slo mo,in 23.98p or 25p.Would you advise still the half setting.. 1/48th /1/50th.Or no shutter 1/60th? or a higher shutter speed?

Shutter off; this way individual motion blur will be the same as at normal speed. If you’re using the slomo for some sort of instrumentation effect or for sports you might consider adding shutter in order to make sharper frames, especially if you intend to stop frame and inspect individual frames.
