Im rendering my finished Movie Studio 9 file to AVI Pal and in doing that the AVI file suffers an attack of shuddering image during camera pan or subject movement sequences.
Difficult to explain the effect but its like each frame slots into place sideways during the movement sequence – its fine when theres not much movement.
Anyone know what causes this? How it can be fixed? Is it an editing or rendering setting Ive overlooked? or is it a low resolution original camera image perhaps? Any ideas please? Cheers.

Does the camera you are using have a CMOS sensore instead of a CCD? If so, this phenomenon is called rolling shutter. Technology is getting better at correcting this issue, but in some of the first HD cameras and CMOS sensor cameras (camcorders) this issue is pervasive.

Here is a link concerning the issue.

Hey Jeremy thank you for that lead – I wondered if it was something from the camera source. On checking the camera its a JVC GR-D230AA 1.33 megapixel(1/4″) CCD. Not very high resolution but it does say CCD. 🙁

Can you post a screen shot of what it is doing? Could it be that the field order is wrong? You know, Lower Field First instead of Upper Field First?

I suffer from those problems on a regular basis

    Few things to try:

    1. It’s a bit strange but try to restart computer before you render. and don’t use the computer while rendering. (give it a try and see, perhaps some jitter may occur otherwise)

    2. try make an interlace test. render a section with: 1. progressive scan, 2. upper field first, 3. lower field first. and compare.
    (project preferences)

    3. I tend to believe that motion in vegas, generally speaking, is problematic. I hope I’m wrong, but It doesn’t looks high quality motion in my opinion. especially slow motion.

    4. if you have “ghosts” in events of slow motion try also:
    event properties
    reduce interlace flicker (check box)
    resample: none

    good luck

ah ha Jeremy thank you. 🙂
yes it was lower field first. ill change that.
also.. is interleave every .250 ok? or should it be set as interleave every frame?

    thanks heaps.

    YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS
thank you to veryone who offered assistance.

The shuddering was overcome by selecting Upperfield First in custom rendering. Ive defaulted it and Im happy as!!!!!

    many thanks
