  • Should I transcode movie files that are in a XF-AVC codec?

Posted by Noam Osband on May 19, 2026 at 2:26 am

I am working on a project. One shooter uses a Canon camera, and when I import the footage, the codec is XFGA. It works fine in Final Cut….and I’ll be doing project editing in Final Cut….but I can’t open any of these files with something like VLC. When I try to open in VLC, I get told “VLC could not decode the format “xfga.”

Should I just edit as is, using the files FCP X created when importing? I dont see why not….but I’ve also never worked with this codec before or not been able to open something in VLC, so perhaps down the line this might be a problem.

    Any advice?

    Hi,

Absolutely no need to transcode for editing. As you say, there are no problems in FCP. It is better to keep the original format.

For playing outside of FCP, you may try different players like IINA or MovistPro.

If you need to really transcode, you can choose a ProRes flavour, but bear in mind that file sizes will grow significantly.
