Should I put Final Cut Pro Studio 2 on a PowerMac G4 with CPU PowerPc G4 (3.2)?
Currently running Final Cut Pro Studio 5.01 and want to upgrade to Final
Cut Pro Studio 2. The people at the Apple store said not to put it on
the PowerMac G4 (Dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4) because the perfomance
would be sup-optimal.I called 1-800 MY APPLE and was told that it would be okay if the current
512MB memory is upgraded to 1 or 2GB. Apple no longer sells memory for
this computer but I found a place that does.According to the Apple online store, the G4 meets the minimal requirements
for Final Cut Pro Studio 2, so maybe the 1-800 guy is right but then on the
same page it breaks down the requirements for using the different
applications,
which is kind of the whole point of getting the latest and greatest right?, and
not only does the PowerMac G4 lack some of these; it appears that some are
not even possible to obtain for the G4.Does anybody run Final Cut Pro Studio 2 on a PowerMac G4 or is this just
plain not sensible? The upgrade is $499.00 (affordable) but a new
computer is a lot $ more. Thanks for any help. -

While I am in between primary Mac computers, I am running FCP 2 on a G4 with a Sonnet 1.8ghz processor. I needed to buy a G4 friendly ATI 9800 Pro video card for FCP to launch. Color will not run and Motion is limited. However, the other apps all work fine. Slower, but fine.
I believe your G4 has better video card options than my G4/500 sawtooth, but you still have to consider the choice of pouring more money down a G4 hole, rather than investing in an Intel rig.
If I did not have the G4, I would have moved on a Mac Pro or MacBook Pro already. The G4 running FCP 6.0, AE7 and other goodies has given me a little breathing room. But with the CS3 Production package now available, I need to move to an Intel rig.
If you want the source for the used, but pampered ATI 9800 Pro video cards, let me know.

I bought it from off of Ebay. The card comes with some of the PCI slot pins pre-taped for use with certain G4s.
The card was $165

FCP renders are definitely slower, especially when rendering multiple layers. However, DVDSP is still pretty good. However, I’m not putting anything more into the G4.
