Should I partition my hard drive on my Mac Book Pro?
When should you partition a hard drive. Is there any particular reason? I like the idea because it keeps the hard drive organized. I can use one partition for the Applications and the other for my FCP files.
Does anyone know when you should partition a drive? Or is it just personal preference.

You CAN partition it if you want…but you shouldn’t use either of those partitions to store media. Media should not be stored on the same PHYSICAL drive as the OS. It will be busy running the computer, and you’ll get dropped frames on occasion. You need a separate drive for media…either secondard internal, or external firewire or eSATA drive.
Saying that I DO have my drive partitioned, but I use one partition to store all my audio files…iTunes library and everything. Just to keep things organized.

Shane, thank you for your response. So does this mean that I should partition my internal hard drive in two. One for my applications and another for my FCP files?
And if so, do you know if I can do that at any time? With out anything drastic? Or do I have to reinstall OS X.

Recently purchased a new system from Promax, and the Mac HD was partitioned and a backup image of the system drive put on the second partition. Obviously, this is not as good a solution as a separate drive (for when the drive fails) but it will protect you against drive corruption or user error. Nice touch I thought – especially if you have a large HD on your MBP (mine is 200gb).
Otherwise, I don’t really see what you can’t achieve using folders – you’ll find them an excellent organizing tool! And please use an external media drive…..
