Shot through outspace – great great distances?
Posted by David Del on May 3, 2008 at 7:01 pmI am trying to make a shot through outerspace – something that will convey the large distance from one point to another. I have tried it in a 3D program, but what I need now is a way to warp from side of space to another – I guess like the hyper warp from Starwars to lengthen out the effect and make it seem like a long distance. Any ideas?

May 4, 2008 at 8:56 amI would need more details.. but you could take trapcode particular (if you have it) and lengthen the particles in z space with a linear keyframe setup at a 45* angle __/–
that might do the trick .. but I don’t know for sure..
Hope this helps somehow..

May 4, 2008 at 4:58 pmThanks for that. I am trying to come up with a typical hollywood travelling through space (ala the movie Contact at the opening) – I wasn’t sure if I should go for the Radial blur through the stars or try to make up some nebula clouds or gas with particular and have the camera travel through that…

August 9, 2008 at 12:08 amCan someone please put together a tutorial on this (or point me to one)?
I got into desktop video as a hobby 8 years ago and have always wanted to do this. “Use particular” is a direction but for someone without much of a background in this stuff, isn’t the most helpful. I can remember back then there were people asking how to do this.
The Tutorial that shows how to do nebulas is great and is certainly part of it but it would nice to see the best way to make the starfield and even more elements to the space journey.
Please if you know of a tutorial (I followed the one that takes you form earth to space, now I want to keep going in space…) pleasel et me know and if you make tutorials, please consider doing this. I know it isn’t cutting edge but i bet it would be one of the most viewed ones.

There is nothing “typical” about that opening, it is a monster even with today’s most recent developments.
This effect was done by a team of people at Sony Imageworks, as I recall, and it took the team huge amounts of time and used Maya and other tools to pull it off realistically…oh, and lots of money.
There is no way that you could pull it off convincingly in After Effects using Particular — or any other plug-in I know of.
Sorry to throw cold water on your hopes.
Best regards,
