shot on HMC in 720p and FCP doesnt recongnize codec.
I am going to try and explain this to the best of my ability.
One of my students was shooting 720p on Mini DV tapes, then switched to an HMC camera and set the camera to shoot 720p to keep her work the same codec.
However, when trying to digitize to final cut from the SD card FCP doesn’t recognize the codec generated from the HMC.
Which can be a regular problem. So now were trying to figure out how to retrieve the footage so it can be edited or how we can transcode it to another format so FCP recognizes it.
I hope that makes sense, this isn’t my general area so the description might be off.

Digitize or Log and Transfer? If it’s an SD card you should be in Log and Transfer.

The HMC imports as best as ProRes…

720p is NOT a codec. the 720 refers to the dimensions of the image and the p indicates it is progressive instead of interlaced.
Therefore 720p footage could be in any number of codecs or formats.
I would highly recommend making sure all of the footage is captured to or converted to the same coded before editing.
ProRes would probably be the best option.

Ive gathered FCP doesnt recognize footage because its not pro res and the 720p footage shot (not sure of the exact codec)
So Im looking to see the best way to transcode it and then drop it into FCP.

the footage is not prores and so I think were looking to see how to change the codec to what final cut will recognize.

The footage is AVCHD…that is what the camera records. You convert it to ProRes when you Log and Transfer it into FCP.

Thats what Id hoped, but final cut doesnt even recognize the files when pointed to the external SD card when trying to Log and Transfer.
