To get what you want without outputting to tape I had to go into AE. All the QT settings just duplicated 1 frame in 5. So I rendered a test image sequence at 23.98. Took that into AE and in render settings I set the field render to lower and the 3:2 to WWSSW which is the standard cadence and the frame rate to 29.97. Output module to QT ProRes 29.97 the interlace box made no difference. Then rendered. That generated a true interlaced 3:2.

November 26, 2008 at 9:57 pmHello Jim,
I did some 3:2 pulldown from 23.98fps to 29.97 with After Effects. The result is quite ok. The audio is not out of sync. But all the on screen text are flickering a bit.
I’m planing on trying with compressor 3. But I haven’t find any explications with the steps. May be on the Apple support website.
I did a reverse telecine with compressor 3 and the result was perfect. So I’m pretty sure that you can get a really good result on a 3:2 pulldown with compressor.

You can’t acutally. It doesn’t know how to add 3:2 back in.

November 27, 2008 at 3:14 amOh I’m surprised.
If you look at the Apple website https://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/compressor/conversions.html
You will find the video at the bottom about FRAME CONTROL. And I saw the option Set duration so frames play at 29.97fps.I’m going to get some footage from work and try that out.

It will add pulldown, but it will be 2:2:2:4 and not standard 3:2.
You check out Nattress film effects filters or Revision’s Fields Kit. Both are cost effective solutions.

November 27, 2008 at 4:19 amI am here to correct myself. Compressor does in fact add 3:2 pulldown correctly. I think this is a new feature, but I am not sure. I have recently downloaded the latest update on this computer and COmpressor is now @ v3.0.5. In the frame controls tab, you should not check the very bottom option where it says “Set duration to: (so source frames play at 29.97)” as that will be a conform, you want to keep the option “100% of source” checked,. You want to set your frame rate to 29.97 in the video settings button (which is located in the Encoder pane) and then in the frame controls tab set the output fields to ‘Bottom first’ and deinterlace to ‘fast’ and rate conversion to ‘fast’.
Sorry about the false information earlier, but at least I made up for it 😉
