  • Shot 16:9, PAL on Sony Z1 what capture/seq settings in FCP?

Posted by Fabio Basone on March 31, 2009 at 4:41 pm

    Hi

Sorry if this is a really basic question but…

I shot in PAL, DV, 16:9 using a Sony Z1 what capture / sequence settings do i use?

If i select standard PAL 720×576 then i get a squashed 4:3 image on capture. If i select DV PAL Anamorphic i get the desired ‘look’ but it still a 4:3 image scaled to 16:9

I thought the Sony Z1 shot true 16:9 isn’t anamorphic just re-scaling the image? And what happens if i chose anamorphic then playback on a 16:9 screen? Will it re-scale it twice, and distort the image?

Any advice would be much appreciated

    thanks

    F

yes that is the one to use.

after your clips are captured you can change the properties to anamorphic, or just
leave everything be and look at it stretched vertically until you make a dvd.

there have been all kinds of problems reported when setting anamorphic properties
    in fcp.

all you need to worry about is:

    1) making sure to encode it as 16:9 for your DVD (if thats what its ultimate destiny is)

    2) letter boxing it in a 4:3 comp if it is to go to tape as letterboxed.

it does not at all matter if its captured as 4:3 or 16:9, it will look the same,
it’s just what kind of issues will you have with fcp.

    hi

thanks for your response. If i capture standard DV PAL which results in a 4:3 image, it’s going to give me all sorts of problems editing it and applying gfx etc as i won’t really be able to tell what they look like 16:9.

Is the Sony Z1 not a true 16:9 camera then? It seems DV PAL 720v576 doesn’t realy allow a true 16:9 image. It just rescales it to fit inside a 4:3 image. Is that correct?

“after your clips are captured you can change the properties to anamorphic, or just leave everything be and look at it stretched vertically until you make a dvd.”

If i change the properties to anamorphic is this just viewing settings rather than output?

Ultimately i may be exporting to the web…does that make a difference?

    Thanks

thats what an external broadcast monitor should be used for (with the 16:9 switch)
this is how I do EVERY 16:9 project since fcp can get whacky if you start checking
anamorphic options. I once for example had random clips in a sequence pillar box!

a true 16:9 SD image is anamorphic. if people look like eggheads, its anamorphic.

if this is never going to be a DVD if its just for web, I would capture it as 4:3
letterboxed and crop the quicktime for web output.

    keep it simple.

I only ever do 16:9 if:

    1) the original edit was HD

    2) a client specifically asks for and shoots in 16:9
