  • Shot 1080i 23.98 from V1U-Possible to Capture with FX1?

Posted by Ted Griffis on December 7, 2007 at 7:15 pm

I don’t work with HDV very often, but have been burned before with having shoot tapes delivered that can only be played back by the camera they were shot on, ie: CANON HL1.

Here’s the question: Can the Sony FX1 playback 23.98 tapes shot from the Sony V1U and ingest into FCP via Firewire?

Does anyone have any experience with this? Can FCP remove the pull down on the fly when using this camera?

    Appreciate the help,
    Ted

Boy, this might be a “try it and see” situation.

I KNOW that the camera will play back the tape since it’s all recorded the same on tape with both cameras. (60 field 1080i Sony HDV)

I KNOW that you’ll be fine if you’re not removing pull-down.

But for removing frames…well I THINK it will work because I think that FCP does this based on the starting frame of each clip. (You used 24pA setting, yes?) So it shouldn’t matter what camera you’re using.

Whether or not FCP can determine what the first frame is while using that camera…I can’t say for sure. You might just have to try it and see what happens. I don’t know if the camera plays any part in that process.

    Thanks for the reply Jeff,

I didn’t actually shoot the tapes myself, they are coming from a client and we are awaiting more specific information regarding format. I guess we’ll just have to see what happens, I agree FCP should be able to handle the pull down, but not sure if that capability is limited by the device control spec of the camera connected.
We’ll see what happens and I’ll give an update.

    Thanks,
    Ted

It’s possible FCP will figure out the framerate. When I captured a test from my Canon A1 with 60i, 24 and 30 p all in a row, it made new clips but captured each segment correctly. The browser will show you what you get.

    Good luck!

    Have a wonderful day.

If all else fail, capture it as 1080 60i Apple Intermediate Codec. Make sure it’s set to start a new clip with each frame.

Then, use this advice to convert the files to 23.98 files:

Time consuming, but a nice fall-back if you need it.
