Shooting Slow motion at 59.94 not interpreting… Broken? Bug?

Shooting 59.94 progressive and interpreting the footage to 29.97 used to give a perfectly fluid half speed slow motion. On the latest version of Prem Pro CC 2017 it is not interpreting. Can someone confirm this?

Workflow to test.
59.94 progressive footage.
Import to PPCC2017.1
Interpret clip to 29.97p
Put on 29.97 sequence and play clip.

It stutters even with a render.
Stepping through the frames, I am getting Frame 1, 1, Frame 3, 3, 5, 5, 6, 6. etc.
Every other frame is repeated.

This is not the way it was. Someone help me confirm this as a bug.

Also testing 59.94 clips on a matching timeline and stepping through the frames every other frame is a dupe of the one before it. What the heck is going on here?

This is not happening with clips shot at other frame rates. Only with clips shot higher than 29.97.

Just took a 29.97 clip, interpreted to 23.98 and put on a 23.98 timeline and it is not replicating any frames and is playing at partial slow speed perfectly as it should.

Could it be that your clip isn’t actually 59.94p?

That’s what I wondered. Camera settings all show 59.94p. And viewing clip properties show 59.94.
BUT this is all Sony AVC codec files. I just rendered out a 59.94 color bars clip with TC on it, and the interp worked.
I am beginning to think that something has broken in the way that Premiere is importing Sony 59.94 media…
Or the FS-7 has developed some problem…
Anyone have a link to any other 59.94p test files?

Hi Dan,

I use Sony 59.94p XAVC clips in a 29.97p sequence and simply set 50% speed to clips in timeline and get the desired result, no need to interpret. Have you tried that to at least get through this project?

Jeff, there is a problem using that technique. It replicates frames. Try it and step through the 29.97 timeline.

I just used a different camera and recorded some 59.94 footage, put it on a 29.97 timeline and put 50% speed on it and it and every other frame is repeated. However IF you interpret it first to 29.97, it will actually be smoother slow motion. Try it out.

But this test has shown me that INTERPRET IS still working and I had a different issue.
My FS7 is shooting 59.94 with a problem.
I just used a X70 for 59.94 and it came in proper.
Now to determine if it is a UHD 59.94 problem or not.
When this is done I am going to have to edit my original post as it now appears the FS7 is the issue.

I’m still using CC 2015 and the 50% speed works perfect as it ought to, so it is either a bug in 2017 or issue with the footage. I’m using X70 footage, 1080p60 XAVC. There is of course no 4k60p on that model, so can’t try that. If you put the 60p clip in 60p sequence and step frame by frame (no speed changes) is it all good?
