Shooting Feature on D7
Posted by Sascha Engel on July 30, 2010 at 6:48 pmI am going to edit soon a feature film, shot on the D7.
Before I just did post for the P2 / Panasonic and the EX1 / Sony – so, I know, how to log&transfer footage with those systems.
How do I do all the Log&Transfer bits with the DSLR Gear?
About the sound I informed myself already here on the COW and heard about the software that makes it easier to get the Audio & Video back together, but about the Capturing process I have no idea.
Help would be very appreciated!Thanx a lot!

July 30, 2010 at 7:37 pmD7? What camera is that? Probably you’re in Nikon-land…
Anyway, perhaps you can consider giving Adobe OnLocation a try. It lets you add metadata to the footage which will be read out in PPro or AE, while also perform rough cuts of the footage.
See this recent episode of Adobe TV: https://tv.adobe.com/watch/short-and-suite/creating-a-rough-cut-with-onlocation/

July 30, 2010 at 7:42 pmNo, it’s the Canon D7 with a special adapter and film lenses connected to it.
I will check the app you mentioned, but for now it will not help me – I am editing in FCP.Sascha

July 30, 2010 at 7:47 pmI believe it’s the Canon 7D, not D7. Nikon sells cameras like the D3… 😉
Anyway, like many other editors these days, you might consider a switch to CS5 – gives you the benefit of having tight integration (AE, PS, AI) and 64-bit coupled with the Mercury Playback Engine, which works like a charm for DSLR footage…

July 30, 2010 at 8:00 pmSounds great, and I might switch to CS5 in the near future, but my editing software still is FCP.
And there I have no clue how to Log&Transfer the – yes you are right – 7D Canon Footage.Sascha

July 30, 2010 at 8:09 pmPlural Eyes for syncing audio and video. Check out this guys site, he’s sort of the Guru of this DSLR stuff and you can get discounts through his site:
https://philipbloom.net/2009/11/14/20-the-amazing-plug-in-pluraleys-for-1-month-only-also-sony-vegas-free-beta-now-out/I think there is a Canon plug in to help you get footage in to your Mac. Then you need to transcode to Pro Res. All the info is on his site somewhere so check his blogs.

July 30, 2010 at 8:09 pmLikewise for me, since I have been an Adobe adept ever since they bought Cool Edit Pro (I have a background in audio after expanding into video).
Perhaps you can download the trial of Production Premium (please don’t install the individual products) and give it a go for 30 days. I think your workflow and experience will not differ that much from FCP…
Ok, enough with the promotalk, already… hope some others can help. Have you done a search on Philip Blooms site? Or consider dropping Shane Hurlbut a mail…

July 30, 2010 at 8:36 pmThe Funny thinig is that I did learn editing on Adobe Premiere – I remember it was the first version 🙂 looong time ago.
But by now i am a True Blood FCP user – I do use AE quiet a lot, but just for CC and FX work.
I will check the site you mentioned.
Who is Shane Hurlbut and how can I get in contact with him?Thanx a lot for your help.
Greetings,
Sascha

July 30, 2010 at 8:51 pmIf you are cutting in FCP, you do not want to edit with the original codec that the 7D records. Your computer will have an easier time with ProRes files.
Convert the Canon H.264 files to ProRes 422. You can do this with Compressor or there may be other programs that will do the same. I have not tried this, but you can look at…
