I have been using the shatter effect for a couple of days now and Can’t figure out if this is a feature of shatter or a problem with the Shatter Effect. I have two tiff’s … one is RGB and has RED hearts scattered all over the 720X480 image. The other tiff is a Grayscale version of the Hearts image but white where the hearts are and black where there are no hearts. No anti-alias either. When I set these two images up in After Effects it works fine… The hearts explode out from the images as expected. If I put a light colored background layer (solid fill) behind these two tiff’s in After Effects the image of the hearts negative area is also visible. In other words the area of the image that does not contain any hearts. The space that is black in the mask file. It looks like a BIG Black piece of Swiss cheese. I set the Shatter plug-in to render just “piece” instead of “All” and the Swiss cheese is still there. Is it possible to get rid of what doesn’t explode when using a custom map for the Shatter Plug-in? Or is my After Effects plug-in messed up?!?!

Did something similar but created a layered file with transparent background. In other words one layer just hearts and transparency. Copy layer and fill heart shapes with white preserving the transparency. Save as PSD (to presesrve alpha). Use hearts layer as shatter and white layer as custom layer map.

    hope it helps

    Thanks robkahn,
It worked… Still having a little problem with the edges of the heart mask (not as clean as I’d like them to be)…. I expanded the mask layer by 1 pixel and put a threshold on it (to make it pure black and white). I’m guessing that the Shatter Effect likes to have more linear lines than curved lines when it has to trace masks. With a Little tweaking I can get it to look half way decent. Thanks again for your help.
