Hello, I have been asked by a client to share the project file at the end, instead of the finished video.
I am concerned about this as I have been -almost- scammed this way not long ago from a different client (I found this from a fellow editor who worked for the same guy and never got paid in the end). I thought I was going to simply give a watermarked version before full payment before he asked me for the whole project instead..
How should I go forward? We’re just negotiating, haven’t started working on it or anything yet.
Never give out the project file unless otherwise noted in a contract. Also in this case the project file should cost a lot of extra because it will mean less money for you if someone else is making versions of that.
I would send the working file but the clips would only be low res proxies.
Most of the time this was normal since the original clips are too massive to send unless it’s via MediaShuttle.
Now as far as contracts go, I have never added it in anything as far as getting an NLE project file with clients. But if it’s a larger film project, it’s common since I am hired to deal with it in many aspects of production.
