Looking to do a significant upgrade in our workflows. This will include a MAM, central shared storage, and a LTO system when LTO7 is released.

So far have investigated and found:

Empress EMAM – $17k (US) for the entry level software and server (think it came with the server, could be wrong) no shared storage

Editshare – $42k (US) 20TB shared storage (500MB/s), automation software, a transcoding server that can also be used for their LTO software system that integrates closely with their MAM software.

CatDV – $19K (US) – enterprise server, worker node, 5 enterprise licences and 5 web bundle licences. No central storage included

Hands down CatDV comes across as the cheapest for what your getting. Would still require central storage for with the empress of the CatDV. What good options are there for a simple central storage about to support 3-4 editors working on 20MB/s streams?

Edit share was the best looking software, and i’m very much attracted to their product. Very nice automation software to ($9k piece of that bundle), with a flowchart based drag and drop automation tools. I’m just not sure if at that price there isn’t better systems out there. Especially when the specs of their servers, are simple quad core Xeons. They just seem rather overpriced for their spec.

I’m all ears to other systems I should check out?

These are the ones i’ve looked at but vetoed.
    Blue Lucy and Axle Video

Interested in looking maybe at ProMax and seeing what options they have. Any other recommendations?

Budget is around $36500 US. Ideally would want to get LTO too, but this may be a next step in our upgrade, as were waiting for LTO7 to be released before jumping in.

    Hey Craig,

You’re looking at the right group of products. I’m glad you mentioned ProMAX, as that is my company, that said…

Us (ProMAX) and Editshare are the only ones that actually make all of what you mentioned as a single vendor eco systems (Storage, MAM, LTO, etc.) both are solid systems, albeit, I do think ours is better 😉 Both additionally have options for transcoding, ours is built in, I believe with Editshare transcoding is an add on. We (ProMAX) also have AE/C4D rendering built in.

The two others that will come up are Facilis and SNS. Facilis is shared storage only, SNS offers shared storage and MAM. Facilis use P5 software for LTO and SNS I think usually teams up with XenData.

If you want to dig into the details on ProMAX Platform, hit me up and I’ll be happy to dig in with you.

    Best,

    Hi Craig,

I believe you’re on the right track also with CatDV at the from end. There are many solutions out there on the server side and in my opinion since that will become your heart for the MAM you should find something that offers stability and scalability. I work for CineSys Inc (https://www.cinesysinc.com) and we have deployed several MAM systems ranging from small to large scale. I’m biased but I would look at Dynamic Drive Pool on the server side. Where are you located and if you want to discuss this further offline you can shoot me an email to jason@cinesysinc.com. Thanks and good luck.
