Severe flickering when i try to move a still in FCP5
I am having a tough time with what looks like a field problem of sorts when i try to move a still across the screen. They are Deinterlaced in Photoshop. I have tried the Flicker Filter on max, the deinterlace filter, field fixer, to no avail. When i don’t animate them, they are fine. I don’t seem to remember this in FCP 4. Oh, it is in a Black Magic 8bit Timeline.
It is a bit maddening, i have a deadline tomorrow… Thanks in advance.

I find that if you add a tiny bit of blur things improve… it’s like you are seeing moire, right? SilkStocking from Eureka helps with this too, but of course both techniques will soften the picture a bit…

It’s not a moire. It looks like a field thing. Sort of like when you park on a frame and it shudders back and forth. It makes the photo totally unrecognizable. As i said, i have deinterlaced, tried the flicker fixer filter on max. I have never seen this before. Tomorrow i will try some other sequence settings and output settings. I’m stumped.

What’s the original source of the still? If it didn’t originally come from a freeze frame of interlaced video, then it wouldn’t have any interlace fields to begin with. In that case what you’re seeing might be the fine details in the photo buzzing, so Jerry’s suggestion to use a tiny amount of blur should work.
If it did start life as interlaced video, though, that’s another matter. Deinterlacing should help, but a tiny bit of blur might help more.

No video, they are tiffs converted to jpeg/png/psd files. I tried them all. When i am parked on them with no motion keyframed, they are fine. If i try to animate them it’s the edges of the image that flicker, in a field like manner. If i park in the middle of a move, i can see a field-type ghost image. I have resorted to doing the move, exporting as a QT and reimporting them. The movment is more severe on an axis move than a scale.
i’m stumped.

What is the resolution and size of the images? In many instances, FCP will flicker large images when moved. I have minimized flickering many times by reducing the image size. As a rule, I make all my stills 72 dpi no larger than 20″ wide. Sounds weird, but it makes a difference.

Most people wrongly avoid optimizing their images in Photoshop. Overkill in DPI and frame size will kill ya every time. I agree with Chris. Adjust your image by frame size at 72 DPI. Want to zoom? Just make the frame size 2 or 3x the size of the native frame of DV, SD or HD, all at 72 DPI.

I seem to remember this problem myself. This might be a dumb question, but have you forced the clips to render? That did the trick for me.
Also, this probably won’t help you, but several are suggesting a blur to help flicker, so I wanted to let you know a trick I learned. If you blur only in the vertical (Y) axis, it should completely deflicker fine lines while maintaining sharpness. You just don’t notice the blur as much when it is only in one direction and for interlace video, only one direction is needed to kill moire.

I’ve heard talk that FCP5 might have some problems with stills that earlier versions did not. Anybody remember?
